Job Description:

The Data Architect plays a primary role in providing architectural, data process, and integration support/expertise as part of Data Warehouse Services team.  Through the development of reliable and stable data models, master data management, reference data management, metadata management, and data quality assurance initiatives, the Data Architect oversees the technical design of the data architecture platform(s) while defining data modeling methodologies, standards, and tools.

This individual leads processes that cover requirements gathering, systems analysis, and functional ROI to create/align optimal data architectures with business initiatives. This requires the development of strong, credible relationships with all team members and the promotion of technology roadmap(s) in a way that both business and technical teams can understand and support.

The knowledge required to perform in this role is diverse at the technical, operational, and industry levels as the stakeholder needs to consider these and more variables when formulating and proposing a data solution.

Job Responsibilities

Domain and Architectural Expertise

Possess a solid understanding of the industry, current operations, and how systems that generate data are configured/leveraged

Possess working knowledge of data architectures including data lake, star/snowflake schema, 3NF, non-relational, and associated methodologies for each

Working knowledge of standard/approved data modeling tools to create/refactor models as needed

Solution

Participate in and/or lead solution-review discussions, working sessions, or other interactions to determine the method(s) of achieving an objective through the use/creation of data

Lead in the creation of conceptual, logical, and physical data assets aligned with enterprise initiatives and engage with project managers, business partners, and senior leadership to ensure data solutions are technically optimal and meet business objectives

Document the data architecture and environment in order to maintain a current and accurate view of the data platform

Maintain all mappings, data dictionaries, enterprise data architectures (schemas/models), with appropriate tools, access, and version controls

Execution

Deploy, validate, and refactor data assets in alignment with other project activities and participants

Coordinate with business partners, analysts, and developers to identify and define specifications, indicate areas of system impact, and continuously communicate project status with escalation when necessary

Provide technical leadership, oversight, and guidance to ensure adherence to design and/or solution to meet technical and business objectives

Collaboration/Communication

Strong leadership, communications, and presentation ability to convey extremely complex and/or abstract ideas effectively to any level of management effectively

Work closely with the project team and business partners on a project helping to align backlogs and work efforts across development teams to ensure timely delivery of complete data capabilities

Promote the vision and data roadmap to drive the DW team forward both technologically and strategically

Promote change control processes and ensure program/project communications

Skills, Education and Additional Information

  • Requires Bachelor’s degree and at least 5+ of experience in the field
  • Data modeling - concepts, modeling experience, and ability to develop conceptual data models using standard tools
  • Advanced knowledge of TSQL and/or other query languages leveraged to for the creation and optimization of data assets
  • Advanced knowledge of data integration concepts, source-to-target mapping techniques, and requirements documentation for ETL team to follow
  • Working knowledge of SSIS and/or other ETL tools to ensure design patterns are consistently aligned to by the development team as part of the overall DW product
  • Advanced problem solving and analytical skills
  • Proven ability to confirm testing objectives, verify requirements are testable, and trace testability back to requirements
  • Working knowledge of project management methodologies and software project life cycle and associated with those methodologies
  • Experience with standard systems analysis tools and procedures
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to establish deep understanding of clients’ business issues
  • Excellent customer service skills
